And they all meet the important criteria that a ramp for such purposes should offer to benefit wheelchair users. A wheelchair ramp should be as lightweight as possible, have a high load-bearing capacity, be slip-resistant and safe to use, durable, weather-resistant, and easy to store. However, a distinction must be made between rigid ramps without moving parts, folding or collapsible ramps, and permanently installed or built-in and portable wheelchair ramps. Good ramps should be designed and constructed with a load-bearing capacity that allows electric and folding wheelchairs, with narrow or wide tracks, to be used. Aluminium ramps and loading rails installed in the vehicle do not comply with DIN 75078 if the height to be overcome is more than 200 mm.

All ramps for barrier-free access to residential complexes do not comply with DIN 18025 if the gradient is more than 6% and no handrails are present.
